George Gershwin’s final work for the musical stage is universally acknowledged as one of the greatest achievements of the American Theater. Known worldwide as an “American Folk Opera,” this Tony Award-winning adaptation premiered on Broadway in 2011 with additional scenes and updated musical arrangements. MTH’s production marks one of the first regional presentations of this Broadway adaptation.

You may have also seen Aggie in RENT at OCTA as Joanne, Gleequel at The Arts Asylum as Mercedes, and Ragtime at The barn as Sarah’s Friend! Brian Vaughn is an educator and musician from Kansas City, MO making a return to the world of performing musical theater after an absence spent educating K-5 music in Columbia, MO and Lee’s Summit, MO. A celebrated trombonist, Brian has performed with Collegiate Shag Brass Band, Columbia Jazz Orchestra, Lee’s Summit Jazz Orchestra, The Missouri Symphony, Mid America Freedom Band, and various churches and pit orchestras in the Missouri area. Brian was the Interim Education Director for MTH’s youth summer camps in 2023. Brian would like to thank Emily Shackelford for getting him back onstage, his family for their support, and his best friend Chip for demanding he get back to this.

Douglass Walker is a native of Kansas City, MO and has been singing since the age of 10. He started singing in church and his love for singing grew from there and transitioned to the stage. He is excited to be apart of the cast of Porgy and Bess. Robert is very excited to be returning to MTH performing the role of Crown. His recent engagements include the world premiere of A Celebration Mass by Sharon J. Willis with the College of Charleston, and the world premiere of Bumpy Johnson: Harlem by Dwayne Fulton with Trilogy Opera. In the summer of 2023 Robert was awarded the ‘Pick of the Fringe’ by the Beford Fringe Festival for his production of the one-man musical play Paul Robeson by Philip Hayes Dean. After returning to the states, he was hosted for a solo faculty recital at Morehouse College.

Originally from Cameroon in Central Africa, Nsikoh (See-Ko) came to the U.S in 2014 with the dream of becoming one of the most prolific Bass players in the World. He started his journey at KCKCC under the mentorship of Jim Mair, who introduced him to the world of Jazz and to the music scene in KC. Later on while pursuing his associates degree in general studies, he started playing full time in the city at some of the most famous clubs “the Green Lady Lounge, The Black Dolphin, the Phoenix, Johnnie’s, The Blue Room, etc..“ with influential musicians and bands in the city such as Tim Withmer, Lonnie McFadden, Desmond Mason, Hot club KC, Son of Venezuela, The Ernesto J Band and many more… From those experiences his dreams have become bigger and are pushing him to pursue higher goals (entrepreneurship and public speaking) to inspire and teach people how to live a life of purpose.

Zak is a highly versatile musician and educator in the KC metro. For the last eight years he has taught various music history classes and performing ensembles at Johnson County Community College and Washburn University. As a woodwind doubler he has played at Starlight, New Theatre, and is currently on his fourth show with MTH. On the local scene, he can be heard with Chris Hazelton’s Boogaloo 7and his own free improvisation group. His recording credits range from local ot national groups such as Lucas Parker Band, DTR, Dorian Electra, HXXS, Pink Royal, and Cubby Philips.

Lawrence Jackson

aka Mr. High C, is a full time musician working with countless ensembles in the KC area. He has recorded with The Phantastics, Marcus Lewis Big Band, and as a featured soloist on other individual albums. Other notable ensembles are: Louis Neal Bgi Band, Mundo Nouvo, The Black Repertory Theater, Joe McGuire Band, 2Proud2Beg, Diamond Empire, and ni 2022 he was an inaugural member of the KCJO’s Rif Generation. The only time he is not active in KC is when he is with Princess Cruises performing for audiences around the globe. He not only performs, but also arranges for horns, and composes for orchestras His music was performed by the Springfield Youth Symphony ni a concert featuring black composers.
